June 24 – 25, 2017

Here’s some basic information about DLARC’s part in the International (US and Canada) Annual ARRL Field Day, first held in 1933.

WHAT IS IT? It is an annual event in which over 40,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate their radios from remote locations.

DLARC will set up stations “in the field” and operate under simulated emergency conditions.

WHEN IS IT? To help or observe the setup of station antennas, transceivers, computers, etc., visit the site around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The “on the air” period is 2 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday. Stay as long as you wish.

WHY DO WE PARTICIPATE IN IT? Besides being a public service emergency readiness drill, it is a lot of fun. It also serves as an “open-house” opportunity to show the community what hams can do in cases of emergency, to provide necessary communication, and in non-emergency cases, talking to other hams around the country to or around the world – the hobby side of ham radio! It’s an opportunity to get on the air, even for those without a ham license (but supervised by a licensed ham), or those who have recently earned their licenses, or those who have recently earned their licenses and would like some experience.

WHY SHOULD WE PARTICIPATE IN IT? It is a good chance to learn how multiple stations can be set up and transmit within a few hours under simulated emergency conditions, outdoors and using generator power; it provides the opportunity to test and improve our radio skills in contacting other hams in our 50 states and the 10 provinces in Canada.

Okay, WHERE IS THE DLARC FIELD DAY SITE? This year our Field Day site will be the East Allen Township Bicentennial Park, in Pavilion “C”, a short distance from Route 987 (Airport Road), near Northampton. Bring your family and friends!
